Wednesday, May 5, 2021 is Red Dress Day. In May 2019, a National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two Spirit included over 230 recommendations and concluded that the murder and disappearance of Indigenous women is a National Crisis. Indigenous Women make up 16% of all female homicide victims, and 11% of missing women, even though Indigenous people make up 4.3% of the population of Canada. They are five times more likely to experience violence than any other population in Canada.
On this National Day of Remembrance in Edmonton, the families affected by MMIWG2S will be hosting a "Take Back Canada" March from Churchill Square to Beaver Hills Park, asking the federal and provincial governments to take action on the 231 calls for justice. On this day, show your support by wearing a red dress or t-shirt to honour those we have lost and help raise awareness for "No More Stolen Sisters".
A collective of advocates and volunteers have created the Red Ribbon Skirt Project. The hope is to make a Red Ribbon Skirt for each grieving family for May 5th as a symbol of their lost loved one and to recognize that their voices have been heard. They have materials for 130 Skirts so far, but can still use more material, ribbon and elastic as the numbers for the March keep growing. They are looking for donations of:
Donations can be dropped off at St. Faith's Anglican Church, 11725-93 St. NW. Monetary donations will gladly be accepted as well through their Go Fund Me Page.
